History of The Department
The Department is an offshoot of the Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling created on 1st March, 1978 following the reorganization of the existing Department of Education by the University. It was mandated to teach undergraduate foundation courses in Education in addition to running postgraduate programmes in Philosophy of Education, History of Education, Sociology of Education, Educational Psychology, Tests and Measurement, Comparative Education and Guidance and Counselling. Its objective is to prepare those who chose career in teacher education at all levels and to prepare specialists in all areas of educational practices. Consequently, the B.Sc. Education (Economics), B.Sc. Education (Geography) and B.Sc. Education (Political Science) programmes were housed in the Department until March 13, 2014, when these Social Science Education programmes were relocated to another newly created department. Meanwhile, in 2012, the Department had been given approval to commence Bachelor of Education Degree in Guidance and Counselling
The University Council at its meeting of 3rd June, 2023 approved the creation of a new department named Counselling and Human Development from the erstwhile Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling, one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Education at that time. The Council noted that the graduates of the department would be able to render numerous educational and social services to schools and the society for optimal development of students and other members of the society. The council also noted that this is in line with the current Strategic Plan of the University, that, is the enhancement of the quality of academic programme to meet the contemporary educational standards and societal needs and that to achieve this goal, the university anticipates increased utilization and enhancement of counselling and other support services. Hence, a full-fledge department of Counselling and Human development is very relevant to the realization of the goals of the university strategic plan in this regard.
