Prof Bayode Isaiah POPOOLA holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English/Education from Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti now Ekiti State University in 1997; M.A. Education (Guidance and Counselling) and PhD (Guidance and Counselling) degrees from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1995 and 2003 respectively. He also did a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Amsterdam in 2006.

Prof. Popoola joined the services of the Obafemi Awolowo University as an Assistant Lecturer in 1997. In addition to his academic engagements, he served as Head, Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling of the University from August 2006 to July 2008. He was elected to serve as the Deputy Provost of the Obafemi Awolowo University Postgraduate College from 2013 to 2016, and later as the Dean of the Faculty of Education from 2016 to 2018.

Besides serving in various capacities within the four walls of the universities, he also served some government and non-governmental agencies, such as the National Examination Council as a member of the School Accreditation Team from 2007 to 2009. He was a Research Consultant to UNICEF, the International Organisation for Migration, the Federal Ministry of Education School Unit, and a member, Governing Council of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria. He is an External Examiner and Assessor to many universities in Nigeria and overseas.

Professor Popoola’s research interest covers such issues as counsellor effectiveness, sexuality counselling, and pedagogy. He has published over 60 works in reputable local and international journals; attended several local and international conferences, seminars, and workshops, and supervised over 28 postgraduate theses. He is a member of various professional bodies such as the Counselling Association of Nigeria, Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria, Association of Educational Researchers and Evaluators of Nigeria, the Reading Association of Nigeria, the International Sociological Association, International Family Therapy Association, the International University Consortium for Sexuality Research and Training, Nigerian Association of Educational and Social Researchers, International Congress of Psychologists, Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists in Africa, and the American Psychological Association.

Professor Popoola is a recipient of many travel grants to international conferences from different international associations. He has been able to attract research grants of over one hundred million Naira to the University. He currently belongs to three TETfund-NRF Research Groups at the Obafemi Awolowo University, one of which he leads as Principal Investigator.

Professor Popoola was appointed on 16th June 2025 by the Governing Council of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education as the first substantive Vice Chancellor of the University. He is currently on secondment from the Obafemi Awolowo University till 13th August, 2030.
